Why You Can't Wait for 12cR2

Some people and organizations still have the idea that they will not upgrade to a new main version of the database before the second version of it. That's the people with didn't go to 11g until we got 11gR2 and who are hanging around waiting for 12cR2.

Unfortunately, your 11gR2 database goes out of premier support end of January 2016 (and that is already an extension from January 2015, which was what normal support policy would indicate). That means you'll have to pay extra for Extended Support from 2016, and you'll still run out of support January 2018.

True to form, Oracle will not give any specific dates for new releases, but based on rumors and answer to questions in sessions, it is safe to assume that 12cR2 won't be around until mid-2016.

We have had a major patch for 12cR1 already, and you don't have to go to pluggable databases in 12c if you don't want it. I advise you to plan for moving to 12cR1.
